Rescuers deal with terrified stray dogs all the time. Depending on how frightened a dog is, they can be extremely hard to put a leash on. Here is a classic example of the struggles of rescuing terrified dogs.
Tania is a rescuer from the Villalobos Rescue Center who went to a certain residence after being called for a rescue. She was with another rescuer named Orlando. When the two rescuers arrived at the scene, they saw a dog hiding near a shed.
Tania tried approaching the dog, but he slid under the shed. The shed was elevated because housing in that area was prone to flood. Thus there are places for fearful animals to hide under.
Tania tried luring the dog out with food. However, the dog went farther inside his hiding place. The rescuers did not give up and came up with a plan.
Tania made use of a rake to gently poke the dog and urging him to come out on the other end of the shed. On the other side was Orland. He had a leash prepared so he can get the dog as soon as he came out.
After a few more minutes of coordination, the dog was finally on a leash. The dog looked unsure. He had no idea that the rescuers were there to save him.
Tania and Orlando successfully brought the dog back to the Villalobos warehouse. At that point, they were trying to figure out a name for him. They ended up naming the dog Heime.
Another staff from the same shelter worked on Heime’s shyness. They had Heime interact with another dog to get him used to socialization. Once he got to mingle with other dogs, Heime will likely be less wary of people too.
Orlando was happy to see Heime interacting with another dog. Some dogs don’t overcome their shyness easily. That wasn’t the case this time.
