As a dog owner, you need to understand that physical exercise is not enough to mentally stimulate your dog. You need to integrate some fun games that will stimulate your dog mentally. Of course, this should be coupled with physical exercise.

Brain games will go a  long way in achieving the desired results. One way to reduce the risk of your dog falling into any behavioral issues is to get some games that will occupy them. They’ll thus engage in some meaningful activity. This is how you reduce unnecessary behaviors such as excessive barking and chewing.

It’s with this in mind that I have taken the time to look at some of the ways in which you can address the boredom issue and stimulate your dog. At the end of the day, you’ll have a sharp dog that can be relied upon.

Let Them Earn Their Meals

What? Yes, you heard me right. Let the dog work for its food. How do you do that? Stay tuned and I’ll show you how.

Here’s the thing, this is a dog. It has a natural scavenging inclination. The minute you make it easy for them to grab a meal whenever they’re tired, you’re creating another habit that is undesirable.

I know you’ve been in the habit of just placing the food inside the bowl and calling your dog o action. This is not taking you anywhere. I’m being honest.

Alter your feeding routine and you’ll have your dog mentally stimulated. This is where you get creative, come up with a game that the dog has to engage in before they can get some food.

A great example is a food dispensing toy. Such include the Bob-A-Lot or Kong Wobbler. All you have to do is to place the meal inside the toy and let them roll it out. I know the game can be noisy but it’s worth it.

Allow Your Dog To Explore and Sniff During The Daily Walks

Let the dog stop and sniff around while you’re walking them. This will give them some mental stimulation. For dogs, it’s not so much about the walk but the exploration. The exciting smells, different terrains, or a different route will be very stimulating.

You can as well let the dog lead the way. You can teach the dog how to sniff around. Let them explore.

A Puzzle Toy

One of the ways that you can keep your dog mentally stimulated is using a puzzle. This is just interactive toys that will keep the dog active. If you want to do this, consider a 15-minute gameplay each day. It plays a huge difference. By keeping your dog focused on a task for a prolonged period, it will act as a confidence booster.

A great game that dogs love is frozen Kong. It will keep the dog busy for a long time. The Kong should be stuffed with treats. This will keep the dog occupied for a period of up to 30 minutes. You can as well come up with tennis balls and muffins, this will gauge the level of interest that the dog has.

Let The Dog Learn Some New Tricks

Consider the number of tricks that your dog knows. There’s so much that you can teach your dog. This goes far beyond the basics. Whenever you teach your dog a different command, it acts as a mental stimulus.
